Common Mistakes That Make Shoe Lifts Uncomfortable

Step Rite Shoe Lifts

The common causes are a heel-only insert taller than a half inch, a lift on a shoe with a shallow sole, a lift worn only part of the week, and a height that needs remeasuring. Each is corrected by building the lift into the sole at heel and ball, putting it on the shoes you wear, and rechecking the number with your clinician.

A heel-only insert that is too tall

The foot tips forward. The ball of the foot takes more weight. The heel slips. Above a half inch, the lift belongs under the sole.

A shallow or soft sole

A thin sole leaves little to split and a soft one flexes the lift. Deep, firm midsoles lift best. The store carries them; a sole photo gets you a yes or no on a shoe you own.

Part-time wear

Lifted on weekdays, flat on weekends, and the body never settles. Every pair you wear regularly gets the lift.

A number that has changed

Bodies settle after surgery and children grow. If a lift that felt right starts to feel wrong, remeasure, and the lift height on the shoe can be changed.
