How to Choose Shoes That Work Well with an External Lift

Step Rite Shoe Lifts

Shoes with a flat, deep midsole and a rubber outsole lift cleanly and hide the lift best. Sneakers, walking shoes, boots, sandals, slippers, dress shoes, and cleats all take a lift. Every shoe in the Step Rite store has been lifted in the lab before, so the fit is known.

What the lab looks for

Depth to split. A firm midsole that holds its shape. A rubber outsole that bonds. A heel counter that keeps the foot centered on a taller lift.

By part of your day

On your feet all day: New Balance 1540 or 928, Brooks Addiction, Orthofeet Tilos. Walking for exercise: Brooks Dyad, Topo, New Balance 860. Boots: Keen Targhee, Propet work boots. Summer: Vionic Tide, Birkenstock Arizona. The house: Birkenstock Boston, Orthofeet slippers. Dress: Dansko, Clarks.

Shoes you own

Email a photo of the sole and we will tell you what it can take. Most shoes with a real sole get a yes.

Widths and orthotics

Extra-depth styles take a custom insert and a lift at the same time. Ask for the wide or extra-wide width if you wear an orthotic.
